Customer Reviews on Philips Hf3485 Wake-up Light Therapy Plus White

It really works! Plus, if you and your spouse have different work schedules, it's a lot less disruptive to the other persons rest.

I have had this for a long time now. It took a long adjustment period as I was very sensitive to the light turning on at first. Now I have it set to the brightest setting and the radio blaring. My girlfriend hates it, but only because I wake up before her and it does a fantastic job of waking up both of us. I am starting to adjust to volume now too though, because the radio slowly gets louder and I am getting pretty good at turning it off and waking up before it gets too loud.

Whenever I am away from home and wake up in the dark, flipping on the light switch has become the single most dreaded part of my vacations. I love waking up with my eyes already adjusted to the light.

I do wish that the sunset feature was easier to set, and that it could be set for the same time every day. But it does help me fall asleep if I am having trouble.

first it comes without the bulb and I had hard time to find the bulb that fits it and the radio reception is very hard to find good location for it then after one week it shutdown for good very bad one maybe but still

I bought this in Dec 2012. My Christmas present to myself. Definitely a "splurge," as I don't have money to throw around, but waking up has always been torture for me. Before that, I had 2 different cellphones with 3 different alarms on each: bells, buzzers, vibration ... early, right time, last chance ... and there were times when I slept through all of them.

It took me a few weeks to feel confident with the setting of the alarm. Don't wait 'til your tired & ready for bed to start setting up this device!

I guess I used it for a few weeks, and then we had a power outage. I'd been waking to radio, but lost all my radio station settings. I was traveling a lot for work, and hadn't figured out how to bring it on the road with me, so when I got home and found it had lost all its settings, I just unplugged it. (I had expected this thing to change my life, but I didn't have quite that experience.) A few weeks ago, I decided to plug it in and start using it again. Having used it, then not used it, and now using it again, I have to say that it does make a pretty big difference. I have it set to come on with NPR in the morning, so I get that 30 minutes of gradually increasing light, and then some news that engages my mind.

I still have the cellphone alarms set, but I'm relying on them less. There is that problem with the 3485 losing its programming if the power goes out for more than 15 mins. So if it goes out during the night, well ... I need to know that I'll wake up for work. I don't wake up naturally. Not til noon or so. So the phones are still there for me. But I find I don't snooze for 2 hours anymore. The light comes on, the news comes on, and then I'm ready to turn off the alarms and get up. Waking up isn't (and may never be) painless, but it's a lot less traumatic.

I got this model because the light bulb is replaceable. It seemed that everyone's biggest complaint with the other models was that the light would burn out, and that meant getting a whole new unit. When I've used the "natural sound" settings, I have used the "tapping" method to quiet the alarm. Maybe I have a light touch - it usually takes me several tries before I can make it snooze. I wonder if all that tapping when the light is hot takes a toll on the bulb?? Now that I wake to NPR instead, I just leave it on 'til I'm ready to leave.

A few things I still haven't figured out fur sure:
At first I thought the clock was slowly losing time, and then I thought it was gradually gaining time. Lately it has been right on. I don't know how an electronic clock keeps time, but anything other than right on worries me.
The light generates quite a bit of heat when it's on at full strength. I always turn it back to the OFF position, to be safe, before I leave for work; then I turn it back to the SET position at night, choosing either my weekend or weekday setting. I think if you get up without turning it off, the light and audio eventually turn themselves off, and I think they won't turn on again the next day (you actually have to re-set the alarm); if this is true, you can't use it to make your house look lived in while you're away.

So... I recommend it. I'm happy that I chose this particular model. It has some features I haven't used yet (hooking up a USB drive, for instance), but I'm pleased with the features I do use. I wish it was easier to set, and that it dealt with power outages differently - it would be great if it would preserve your settings, even if it didn't continue to keep time, for instance. I tried using the "wind down" feature at night, but it just wasn't for me. I think the light would get dim just when the book I was reading was getting good. I might try this again some day, with some less interesting reading material.

I was between 4 and 5 to give this and if it had a memory for every time the energy goes out it'd definitely be a 5 !

As a clock you can adjust to be awaken by birds, forest or some other cool sounds that could make you fall asleep again. There is also some other sounds to download from Philips website and plugging on the USB.

The previous version had an adaptor for iPod and I was expecting this to work with Android - but it does not. Although it does say on my S4 that there is a device connected probably the driver is not built for mobile devices.

You can set 2 different alarms with different sounds for each or select one of the 3 radios from memory previously set.

This new version has a nice setting that if you easily hit it then it goes for a snooze. On the older version bulbs used to burn VERY easily and this has the bulb replaceable for a normal car bulb (h7 if not mistaken).

Definetly a good buy and the experience of waking up with a dimming light is GREAT. Look on youtube for the chicken naturally waking up at 4 am lol. It's awesome and once you get it to normal, you'll love.

Customer Reviews on Sphere Gadget Technologies Lightphoria Sad 10,000 Lux

I was using a much larger SAD light that has great reviews here on Amazon and is at least 3 times the price. It worked really well in the months I used it so I was pretty sold on SAD lights by the time I ordered this little guy. The problem with the larger light is that it's not easy to move around so I leave it at my computer table so that I can have a pick me up if I'm dozing off at the computer, but I don't always use the computer in the mornings. In fact lately I've been using it less and less for work, so I got this little one that is easy to tranport into any room I want to use it in. I say that this little guy works just as well as the big light I have at 1/3rd of the price. The only drawback is that it's not battery operated, but that's not very important to me. You could maybe get yourself around that by attaching some sort of battery pack to it- not sure. There are a couple of portable SAD lights that use batteries like the Lumie Zip- but that costs $200 and you can't adjust the strength of the light nor does it have a light timer like this one. So I think the power cord is a miniscule caveat that won't disuade most people from this great purchase.

I got this after reading the reviews and all I can say it really does work!
I use it twice a day, once in the morning and once after lunch and it really helps tell my body to wake up. It sets my circadian rhythm back to normal despite being an air hostess. After every long haul flight, I still wake up at 8am in the morning latest, thanks to light therapy. Before, I don't feel tired even when it's past midnight but now it isn't a problem when my body naturally wakes up so early.

I'm not sure about seasonal affective disorder but it's worth getting if you work in day/night shifts.

Pros:
- it works well for resetting my body clock
- the light is very bright
- doesn't have weird smells which is a common problem mentioned on some reviews for other products
- it's small enough to carry for my trips
- the adapter works on voltages for all countries

Cons:
- the timer only allows 15, 30 and 45 minutes intervals

Get one if you have problems with controlling your body clock.

Saw this on an ad from a magazine and this is the best therapy lamp in its price range. Most of the other therapy lamps are very expensive and are out of my budget. Firstly, I do not suffer from SAD nor do I have sleeping problems. I just want to feel more energetic during the short daylight winter days. This is what everyone needs when living in the northern latitudes of the US. I've used the lightphoria for 3 weeks now and it has brought positive impact on my mood. 3 week isn't long enough to speak for its reliability but I can tell you how the device functions.

The lightphoria is a solidly constructed piece and attractive to be placed anywhere at home. It doesn't have any fancy digital displays or flashy buttons. All it has are 7 basic functions which pretty much explains why it is half the price of the expensive models. I would much prefer to cut out the fancy i-phone-like buttons on home appliance like this to keep the price affordable. Operating is very self explanatory with timer settings and intensity settings for you to choose. It comes with a back stand which is pretty standard for most therapy lamps. It comes with a travel pouch too which may come in handy for those who travel through time zone and need some extra light to acclimatize to your destination.

I'm a newbie so I use it only 30 minutes a day during my slow mornings. When in use, the light isn't bothersome on the side of my peripheral vision even when on HI setting - though the first couple of days was not as comfortable as I thought. Your eyes get used to it and immediately it takes effect on your body. It works pretty much like the way the sunlight sheds your room in the morning and forces you to wake up. The body registers this as a 'wake up call' and naturally your hormones do the work.Read more ›

It's great to keep energy up when facing a computer all day. I got this to replace my old philips lightbox that I got from cosco many years ago. The light flickered so I knew it's not doing any good to my eyes. This light is slightly brighter when set on HI and I like the fact that it doesn't take alot of time to set the timer, set the intensity etc. It's a simple set of analog buttons that doesn't have any computer systems that you have to press and hold, or press things simultaneously to get functions working.

The product comes at a reasonable price and is worth the money. Good deal, highly recommended.

I'm 35 now and I've been using this light box faithful for about 3 weeks now. I've heard people say this was a spoof but my therapist say it'll take up to several weeks before the effects kick in. I religiously continued to use it and I can say that this really works. It doesn't bring major changes to your emotions or mood, but you can feel more awake during the day. It's as if you were long term in a picnic under the sunshine. I will be using this every winter now when my energy levels and mood deteriorate worst. I'm in the courier industry and you really gotta be awake when at work or you get into a mess with deliveries. I've recommended this to my night shift buddies. This lightphoria is pretty good for its price but there are higher end models with more features. But as recommended by my therapist, make sure you get a 10,000 lux sad light or you'll see no effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works if used at first sightFebruary 9, 2014

If you don't use it at the first tingle it won't stop the cold sore from growing. Carry the device with you wherever you go. If your cold sore starts to swell it's too late but it will help shorten the healing time. If you have to wake in the middle of the night to use it, do it. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars More uses than just your lipFebruary 7, 2014

So I use this on my lip and it works really well. I'm very happy with it. But then I injured my quad... to the point that I had to be carried off the field (yes, sports related injury). I was desperate to get better because I was going on vacation in 3 days and wanted to have freedom to actually move. I tried this on my leg and I SWEAR it helped it. I now use it on injuries (I'm accident prone) and I really think it helps. I'd recommend this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars It works!November 7, 2013
By nikkisan (Eau Claire, WI United States)
My daughter, age 8, has been getting cold sores for years and has always hated taking the perscription medication. I got sick of fighting with her and got sick of endless rounds of medication so I bought the Lipzor. The first few times she got coldsores we used the lipzor her acyclovir and it seemed to help decrease the sore. The most recent cold sore we only used the lipzor, at the first sign of the coldsore, and it worked! She still had a small outbreak but it quickly went down quickly. We also used abreva but no acyclovir. She can hold the lipzor on her lip herself and no more RX! I would highly recommend this product. It will pay for itself in no time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge ImprovementJuly 25, 2013

I've been taking Acyclovir for years. I don't know why, because my cold sores would continue to spread and last 10-14 days anyway. I've used many types of home remedies - peppermint and clove essential oils (yes, the Young Living brand), they seemed to have minimal effect. I've only used this once so far, and it was GREAT! I usually get the tingling and after that about a quarter of my lip would swell for a few days and BAM an outbreak the size of my nail bed would surface. It would then spread to other areas, and I wouldn't be "clean" again for weeks. I used this during the tingling stage as directed, and the swelling stopped. Only 3 sores appeared, about the size of the "." mark on a keyboard button; two of which didn't even surface. They were gone in 5 days. It still spread, but I continued using as directed and it was totally under control. It's been a few weeks since this outbreak, which is pretty new as well. I highly recommend this to any fellow victims of the herp.

I found this device on amazon & I did lots of research & this device seems to be more popular in Europe so that's why I decided I was going to try it since I was desperate.
1st EXPERIENCE, One morning I woke up with very small blisters & I was upset cause instructions said to use it ASAP at the first sing of tingling sensation for best results. However, I still went & used my device for the 1st time & I wasn't really expecting results since I already had small blisters. MIRACLE, i was so surprised & happy when I saw that my blisters did not grow at all, in the past my blisters would grow very fast & next thing you know I would end up with a huge cold sore. By the third day you could barely notice I had something next to my lips.
My 2nd EXPERIENCE was even better, I was able to catch my cold sore on the very 1st sing of tingling sensation & a little bit of redness on my skin (no blisters). I immediately used my device and all I could say was WOW!!! WOW!!! I never got blisters, the cold sore never develop, all you could see was redness & by the 2nd or 3rd day you could not see anything :-)
3rd EXPERIENCE I woke up one morning with medium size blisters ;( instructions on device say it wont make blisters disappear but it would stop it from getting bigger. since I had these noticeable blisters I thought i wasn't going to see any results but I was surprised when my blisters healed faster than usual & I only had a medium cold sore instead of a huge one (like I used to get in the past before Lipzor)so this was better than having a huge 1 inch approximately in diameter cold sore. My cold sore was only like 1/2 an inch this time & dried up pretty quick & this time did not have a scar for weeks like I used to get in the past.
Today it is may 31 2013.

AMAZING!
By David on December 2, 2012
This little light has totally changed my life. I have suffered from cold sores for years and have tried many things, but this is the first one that had truly made a difference in the quality of my life.

Here's my regimen for preventing/treating cold sores (I find it to be VERY effective!)
- 2,000 mg of Lysine daily (1,000mg in AM and 1,000 before bed)
NOW Foods L-Lysine 1000mg, 100 Tablets
- Prescription drug Valtrex (500 mg daily)
- Vitamin B Stress Complex (1 tablet daily)
Nature Made Stress B Complex with Zinc Tablets, 75 Count
- 2,000 mg of Vitamin C (1,000mg in AM and 1,000 before bed)
- I use the Lipzor 3 times a day (for 3 minutes/one cycle) whenever I'm stressed, sick, or upset (those are my triggers for a cold sore).
- After using the light I apply one ice cube to the emerging sore. I allow the entire thing to melt.
- Then I apply HL 30 (a chapstick that's supposed to help treat/prevent cold sores). I use this almost every day even when I don't have a cold sore.
Herpecin-L Lip Balm Stick, 30 SPF, 0.1 Ounce
- At night before bed I apply a Compeed Invisible Cold Sore Patch. They also have a patch specifically for nighttime use! These help keep the blisters from erupting. Also, if the cold sore has already surfaced, the helps conceal it incredibly well!

Works Awesome
By M. Kramer on November 7, 2012

Let me start by saying that I was a total skeptic on this thing, and so was my wife. She's wasn't terribly thrilled on spending almost a hundred dollars on this magical device, but she also knew how much we were spending on ointments and how miserable the cold sores made me. I bought this after a really bad outbreak, where I had 3 cold sores on my lips in rapid succession and was really fed up with them. I ordered it, and didn't really have a chance to use it until almost 6 months later. Unfortunately, I was away from home when it started, so I wasn't able to squash it before it broke (but read on). When I got back home, I started using it immediately that morning. By the next morning, the cold-sore was already dead! Normally my cold sores (treated with abreva, zovirax etc) would last 5+ days before dying off. This was encouraging!

I've since had 2 or 3 more cold sores that have broke, but all were dead the following day. I can't tell you how awesome this thing is, and what a relief it is to have something that actually works. As for the reviews stating if you catch it early enough you can prevent it from breaking: I don't have enough cases where I feel like I've caught it early enough to tell you for sure, but there are 2 specific scenarios that I swore I was getting a cold sore and immediately used the device and it never materialized - did the Lipzor kill it? I don't know, was it just in my head? I don't know that either. But I'll tell you what, to have something that at the very least kills a cold sore in 1 day is well worth the price. And if I call myself a skeptic, then my wife was even more of one, and she's in a 100% agreement that this thing really works.

I hope this review helps others cold sore sufferers out there get over the hump of getting this thing. I'd buy another one right now if mine ever broke!

At first I was going to get one of those very compact lights, but I'm glad I got this one. The light is large, standing a foot and a half high, but I think the size makes the light very effective. I'm glad I spent the few extra dollars and got this quality unit. My computer area is not very bright, so I set this light next to me and I can still see use the computer screen to do my work while getting the benefits of simulated sunshine. Although the stand does not look super strong, so far it has been working effectively for me. The stand allows the light to be supported next to me while I am working. It is at a very good angle for the light.

This lamp has helped my family & I alot during this very long, cold winter - it arrived from Amazon.com in mid-January. We have spent most of this winter indoors due to extreme cold, so we had all been lacking sunlight, each of us feeling some symptoms of SAD.The light is very bright, which makes it perfect for placement on the kitchen table while I help my kids with their homework. It doesn't get too hot after use, it's easy to store, the electrical cord is a decent length, it's noiseless (ie; doesn't hum), & it's easy to keep clean. The only drawback I have experienced: I've had achy eyes & a headache after spending a longer time infront of the lamp - it's better to sit infront of the lamp with sunglasses on or cover your eyes if you wish to bask in the rays for a longer time, or if you're sensitive. Nothing quite compares to real, full, natural sunlight to alleviate symptoms of SAD, but this lamp is the next best thing - it has definitely helped!

I began having seasonal depression and suicidal thoughts a few winters ago...living in New England can be a harrowing experience for a west coast transplant, but the rewards offered by this region are plentiful from colleges, apple picking, the Atlantic Ocean, and being face to face with a very regal and old environment replete with frostbitten and infernal winters.

I started seeing a therapist which was the first step. The second was obtaining this light which tricks your eyes into thinking it's sunny outside. This lamp is really wonderful to view obliquely while you're studying, playing cards, etc. Mine is tucked away in a corner behind a plant. I feel more energetic using it at least 14 minutes and most energetic when using it between 15 and 25 minutes. Over that time limit, I might start feeling a headache coming on.

Thanks a lot Amazon...don't you think that at this time of the year that might not be the best idea?? So disappointed...

This purchase was a replacement for the same product which I'd been using since 2001, bought direct from the manufacturer at that time. It lasted 12 years. I couldn't imagine life without it so I went shopping around for a new one, and the Amazon price couldn't be beat. Needless to say, after 12 years of constant, daily use for many hours a day, I can't recommend a product more highly. I began using it to combat depression. It helped tremendously. After that I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and started taking meds, and continue to do so today. But I never stopped using the HappyLite. I keep it mounted on a wall behind my computers. When I sit down to log on, usually as soon as I finish breakfast, I turn it on and leave it on while at the computer. For a new user it may take time to adjust how long you stay near it and the distance. For me, I had no issues right from the start. I keep it about four feet away, slightly to the left so it's not directly in my eyes. It almost feels like sitting by a window with the sun shining in. I notice the benefits immediately, within minutes of turning it on. I can almost feel the neurotransmitters kicking in. I've had it on for 4-6 hours a day while at my desk, although that may be a bit much for new users. You know when it's time to turn it off when you start feeling like you've had too much coffee, or if you get a headache. Then adjust back the time if you feel that happening. The bulbs have lasted me about two years. It is definitely worth it and I can't imagine my days without it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Customer ServiceJanuary 20, 2014

I'm giving this product one star because it worked satisfactorily for a little over a year. The one-year warranty expired in October 2013, and my lamp quit working around Christmas, for no apparent reason (bulb appeared to be OK). To Verilux's credit, they said they'd honor the warranty and replace my lamp. I sent it back 3 weeks ago. When I called today, they said they'd probably have it processed in 2 weeks, and that I'd receive the new one 5-7 days after that. I was told that the usual turnaround time for warranty items is 4-6 weeks. That's not acceptable customer service! We're in the depth of the SAD season now, precisely when customers need their lamps. You know, if you make a product that customers depend on to help them get through the winter months, the smart thing to do is to get them back (either repaired or replaced) ASAP, not in 4-6 weeks. I am very disappointed with the way Verilux handles this critical part of their business.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY bright light; may cause problems if used too earlyJanuary 10, 2014
By
Mr. Walker (Michigan)

I can't say I've been particularly "depressed"; however, this winter I finally thought about it some more, and noticed that most days I am tired at night, wake up tired, and drag through the day. I have tried a number of supplements to help with sleep, and even melatonin (because I thought maybe I didn't make enough?) but it makes me too hung over.

I read about 'sleep phase displacement' and how the lack of daylight can mess up your melatonin and serotonin production, etc. and figured I'd give a lamp like this a shot.

It is sharp looking and easy to use. I agree with another reviewer who said it is either BRIGHT... or VERY BRIGHT. I have only been using it in the mornings for 20-40 minutes while I try to wake up bleary eyed and have coffee, then later pack my lunch. I stand or lean about 2 ft. from it, or if I have time I sit near it. It seems bright enough for a spaceship medical bay.

UPDATE 3/6:
At first I thought this light was helping me to wake up better. However, since it is VERY bright on the lower setting (blinding on the higher one), it can make you feel odd/overstimulated sometimes. I have been using it in the dark, prior to sunrise by a couple hours, while I eat & get ready. I think it is screwing up my sleep and day, because lately I am TIRED in the second half of the day (despite more time in bed and more regular bedtimes).

I am going to try only using it AFTER sunrise to give me some more light time, and see if my sleep and waking improve. If you are unsure about this one or the Compact Happy Light, the compact one is the same lumens as this lamp on "low" (and high is just too high for me), and it is nearly half the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product for depression, the light therapy each day!December 23, 2013

Thank you, very very much! I am so very pleased that I picked that Verilux VT05FWW1 HAPPY Light Energy Lamp 5000! I use the lamp when I am able to, once every A.M. for 45 min. to an hour and it certainly does help with my depression. When I first started though, I tried the lamp for only a half an hour. Also, do not look directly into the light! Placed the lamp at an angle on my dining rm. table & did whatever I needed to do for the A.M., with the lamp placed several inches from my face like the directions mentioned in the pamphlet. "Aloha" and "Thank You", Verilux & Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent solution to S.A.D.!December 9, 2013

I currently live in the northeast and originally from the sunny and warm climates of SoCal. This lamp has definitely changed the way I feel during these long, often dark, winter days. After a couple years of experiencing S.A.D. I decided to give the "happy light" a try and I love it. I have it on my desk in the office and turn it on for an hour on the high settling in the morning and for an hour in the afternoon on the low setting. It doesn't take up much space and has seen working great. My only suggestion is that you use as directed. I've found that too much exposure to it will change your sleep patterns, but other than that I give it 5 stars.

I picked this up today at a warehouse club because it had a great rebate and I noticed that I've been feeling really lethargic since the weather turned cold. I live in a midwestern state that spends most of the winter under gray clouds.

I had a wake-up light by Philips but the bulb burned out and it apparently can't be changed. So an $80 lamp that lasts a year. No bueno.

I liked this light immediately after changing the screen from the bluish tinged to the "high energy" one. It has two settings - bright and REALLY bright. It really does feel like I'm sitting outside on a sunny day, except without the bugs, the sunburn and the guilt while looking around at all of the unattended gardening. I woke up feeling SO tired and weak, like I couldn't even hold my toothbrush. I turned this on and sat in front of it for 45 minutes now and I have a huge burst of energy. Maybe it's all in my mind, I have no idea. But I don't care as long as it works.

The bulb is user replaceable and the cord is nice and long. It's very lightweight but still sturdy. The size of the actual light screen is about that of larger paperback book but the lamp in its entirety is about a foot tall. It's flat in shape so it can sit pretty close to the wall. It's very easy to change the screens on your own. One screen has a definite bluish tint, that I didn't like. It reminded me of every government building I've ever been in. The second one is still a fluorescent, but his a whiter tint to it, which I prefer.

I've pleased with this purchase and thinking of going back and picking up another as a gift for my husband to use at work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Died out on me after 2 months. Garbage.December 1, 2013

I bought the HappyLight in November and was pretty happy with it, save for the little tinny noise it made. However, just this morning the lamp died out. Unfortunately for me, it happened outside of Amazon's return window, and Verilux charges the customer for shipping both ways (once to return the defective item, and once to receive the replacement) even though it's THEIR product that's defective. Now that's just bad customer service. I didn't fork over $70 for a lamp that was only going to last me 3 months, and I shouldn't have to incur any extra costs just to keep it running for as long as Verilux promised.

Thankfully, Amazon.com stepped in to offer me a refund. I'll be taking my money to a company that has more customer-friendly policies -- and a lamp that actually works.

Customer Reviews on Verilux Happy Light Therapy Energy Lamp VT05FWW1 5000 LUX
